Most drugs are mostly bad.
Apr 20 2011, 10:37 PM EDT
A great number of individuals at first become awakened to the Light within via states of so-called "altered awareness" achieved by inducing various psychoactive substances and vegetation. The tremendous effect it has on an individual's brain is enough to call for speculation about whether or not these drugs could influence the brain on an evolutionary scale. However, one must realize that in an effort to encapsulate the truth about this spiritual body we remain lost in the mind. In The Electric Cool-Aid Acid Test (by Tom Wolfe) Ken Kesey, the legendary originator of the hippie-movement, strongly voiced his goal to lead his fellow-seekers and friends to a state of deeper surrender, so they could cast out their desires even to take the drugs that played such a vital role in leading up to that very moment of surrender and realization. So, without the drugs, he would urge his fellow seekers to remember that the Light shines from within them, and that there really is no cause for disturbing the natural rhythms and cycles that the gross body naturally maintains under the influence of a passive voyage with those powerful chemical adulterants. From a logical perspective, Kesey saw the light before Leary did, because in his writings Leary always occasionally offhandedly dismisses the so-called ego-games that people play as part of life, and not relevant to the issue of tripping balls and experiencing death and reincarnation through psycho-active meditation. He acknowledges that the ego disappears in this state and that it returns after the effect of the drug has worn off, whereas Kesey based his Acid Graduation on "transcending acid." Namaste my fellow sentient friends! May thine Light always guide thine hand and thine mind . 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Leary contacted me by email a few months before his death, we had some good conversations about his attitude about drugs. He pointed out how most people are addicted to some drug without knowing. Caffeine, nicotine, sugar, etc etc... whether regulated by the FDA or not they are all drugs. In fact, any food or beverage which causes you to release endorphins into your body is drugging you, whether its your love of tofu or icecream. In addition to our endemic collective hypocrisy Leary also pointed out that many drugs occur naturally within the human body. This includes DMT which occurs naturally in our brains as well as forms of acid which we store in our spines and which shoot up into our brains at death.... OR DURING CERTAIN MEDITATIONS. After talking with Leary and with Kesey's clan every year I attend the Oregon Country Fair (he lives outside Eugene along with the famous original "magic bus", now restored) I have this to say about drugs:Understand what they are, why you are taking them and how much to take. Understand the difference between the "hippies" of lore who sought out the shamanic experience (a) to bring them closer to God or the Transcendental State, (b) to prepare their mentis to withstand the pressures and forces of the limitless dimensions one can visit, (c) to create an ever-growing community of united-minded peoples who seek solutions to problems small and large. That is the difference between a "Hippy" and todays version, often called "Burners". A Hippy is "hip", they are taking specific amounts of specific drugs for specific purposes. A Burner has few or (more typically) no ethics, no real purpose to speak of and increasingly takes drug "cocktails" loaded with newer drugs derived from meth (ecstasy etc) or other nasty chemicals. That is not the Shamanic way. Let's be smart about this subject please. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I like that term you use, Burners! The hippies were typically described as being hedonists, which I think is definitely overstated. Burners are the real hedonists in that they use anything to get high, indiscriminately. Most hippies probably did have a lot more respect for their physical bodies! They also had rules concerning where, when, and how much acid they would take, so there was certainly a degree of ethical inclination. That being said, apparently they were also quite often full of junk like speed, IT-290, and otherwise dangerous or invasive kinds of chemical drugs, so I think they were a little callous for that! Like you said, we have to be smart about what we put into our bodies for whatever reason! Following a raw-food diet is very important to me, and since I've started I've felt transformed, and any latent desire that might arise to, say, smoke a nasty cigarette or whatever, is easier to accept and let go.There is a single-pointedness of mind to keep my body as healthy as I can, and everything else besides I can recognize as either distractions from that path, or indeed true obstacles that allow me to make mental progress in my yoga. The wound of addiction could either destroy a person, or it could (under the right circumstances) facilitate increased mental willpower in the act of overcoming it. 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
