A great number of individuals at first become awakened to the Light within via states of so-called "altered awareness" achieved by inducing various psychoactive substances and vegetation. The tremendous effect it has on an individual's brain is enough to call for speculation about whether or not these drugs could influence the brain on an evolutionary scale. However, one must realize that in an effort to encapsulate the truth about this spiritual body we remain lost in the mind. In The Electric Cool-Aid Acid Test (by Tom Wolfe) Ken Kesey, the legendary originator of the hippie-movement, strongly voiced his goal to lead his fellow-seekers and friends to a state of deeper surrender, so they could cast out their desires even to take the drugs that played such a vital role in leading up to that very moment of surrender and realization. So, without the drugs, he would urge his fellow seekers to remember that the Light shines from within them, and that there really is no cause for disturbing the natural rhythms and cycles that the gross body naturally maintains under the influence of a passive voyage with those powerful chemical adulterants. From a logical perspective, Kesey saw the light before Leary did, because in his writings Leary always occasionally offhandedly dismisses the so-called ego-games that people play as part of life, and not relevant to the issue of tripping balls and experiencing death and reincarnation through psycho-active meditation. He acknowledges that the ego disappears in this state and that it returns after the effect of the drug has worn off, whereas Kesey based his Acid Graduation on "transcending acid."
